Upon x-ray irradiation, diselenides produce high levels of ROS, leading to enhanced DNA damage in cancer cells. Then, the nitroimidazole in the molecule inhibits impaired DNA repair, providing a synergistic radiosensitizing effect of cancer. Furthermore, the probe showed low and high NIR-II fluorescence ratios in the absence of ROS and in the presence of ROS, which is suitable for precise quantitative monitoring of ROS during sensitized RT.
